The Truth About Passive Income: Starting with Zero

Passive income

The F.I.R.E. philosophy emphasizes generating sufficient passive income to cover your day-to-day expenses without actively working for money. This is easier said than done. The process is neither quick nor easy in the beginning. The initial phase of building passive income is the slowest and could be highly discouraging. The power of compounding does not feel significant in the initial few years. This leads many people to believe that unless they have a substantial amount of money to start with, they cannot build passive income streams. It is also true that most passive income streams are initially very active, which discourages many people from taking action. For example, some people want to write a book or produce music to earn lifelong realities or licensing fees. This will require a lot of initial time, effort, and money(to promote) before it can reach into a passive income stream.

So, how much money is required to build a passive income stream? The answer to this question is highly dependent on one’s financial status. This is comforting, as it means you can work towards building a passive income stream with no initial monetary investment. The key requirements to create a passive income stream are education and time investment.
While money can accelerate your journey without education and time commitment, it can be an expensive failure. The less money you have to begin with, the more time, discipline, and effort it may require. But it is always possible to start from anywhere. If you have financial constraints, choose something you enjoy doing and excel at it. Do not worry if you are paid in peanuts as long as you have the right mentor and you can make progress. As I mentioned earlier, it will be very active initially. However, once you develop your skills, you will be able to improve the value of your time significantly. This will lead you to either gradually make it increasingly passive or accelerate building seed money for a passive income-generating source, such as real estate or owning a small business.

To conclude, everyone starts from a different point, and it is not a lack of money but a lack of education and discipline that leads people to assume they will never have enough money to build passive income streams.
